Day 1

Monday, July 12, 1999

Worked with Chris and Dave. Dave instructed me in preparing cabosil, and resin. Chris helped me layout, trim and notch the ailerons. Next the hinges were riveted to both aileron spar, surfaces were sanded, cleaned with acetone and the spar was bonded to the aileron skin with cabosil.

Two bid tapes were laidup over the aileron/spar bond. Next aileron ribs were hot-glued and q-cell was radiused into the joint.

First flap was notched and trimmed for installation of hinge. The first flap hinge, spar and backup plate was drilled and attached with flush AN rivets using a rivet squeezer. Next Cabosil was applied to the bottom edge of the flap spar and squished to flap skin with pressure applied till cure.

Day 2

Tuesday, July 13, 1999

Glassed in ribs on left aileron with 2 bid tapes. Q-celled right aileron ribs with radius and then glassed with 2 bid tapes. Notched second flap skin for hinges. Drilled second flap spar, hinges and backup plate and riveted spar to hinge with flush rivets and rivet squeezer. Applied Cabosil to bottom surface of flap spar and squished to flap skin.

Attached aileron counterweight arms to outer rib of both ailerons with two AN bolts and nutplates pop riveted to inner surface of outer ribs. Measured and drilled holes for both aileron actuator bracket to other end of ailerons.

Laid up two bid tapes along both flap spar/skin joints on inside.

Trimmed aileron ribs prior to closing out ailerons. Applied large bead of Cabosil to top of right aileron ribs, spar and leading edge surfaces. Closed out right aileron and left over night to cure.

Day 3

Wednesday, July 14, 1999

Laidup 2 bid tapes along trailing edge of left aileron. Squished and closed out left aileron with a bead of Cabosoil on a all ribs, top of spar and trailing edge. Weighted top aileron skin with to steel bars and clamped trailing edge with spring clamps.

Laidup 2 bid tapes on bottom of second flap spar/skin junction. Trimmed and installed flap ribs on first flap. Q-celled flap ribs and laidup two bid tapes on each rib/skin joint. Trimmed and hot glued flap ribs on second flap. That’s all for Wednesday.

Day 4

Thursday, July 14, 1999

Laidup 2 bid tapes on each rib/skin joint on second flap. Installed flap actuating brackets on both flaps. Laidup 2 bid tapes on trailing edge of first flap, trimmed ribs for top skin closeout. Wetted out top of first flap spar, top of ribs, trailing edge and laid a thick bead of Q-cell on each surface. Fitted first flap top skin and squished with weights and clamps.

Fitted second flap top skin to flap. Trimmed ribs and fixed corner of foam on top skin that was out of place, trimmed out section of center foam on top skin for clearance. Laid 2 bid tapes over trimmed out section.

Day 5

Friday, July 15, 1999

Installed 2 bid tape along trailing edge of second flap. Applied milled fiber/Cabosil on top of spar, ribs and trailing edge and fitted top skin for final closeout of flap.

Trimmed ribs for right wing and installed square to main wing spar with hot glue gun. Began Q-Celling wing rib joints where rib meets top wing skin and main spar.

Day 6

Saturday, July 16, 1999

Finished Q-Celling right wing rib joints. Used 1 quart zip lock bags folded into a triangle for squeezing out Q-Cell, worked much better than the 1 gallon bags. Mixed too much catalyst into Q-Cell/Resin mixture, making the working time much too short. Will try to mix resin into Q-Cell and add just enough catalyst for the amount of resin added next time.

Laid up 2 bid tapes on all upper wing skin/rib joints. Installed most of the ribs on the left wing with hot glue gun.

Day 7

Monday, July 18, 1999

Installed missing ribs and hot glued into position. Cleaned all rib/skin joints with acetone in preparation for Q-Celling and lay-ups. Q-Celled all spar/rib/skin joints, this time using q-cell mixed with resin for workability. Resin added to Q-Cell was weighed and catalyzed with the proper amount of MEKP for resin used. This improved the working time of the Q-Cell tremendously. After joints were Q-Celled, 2-3" bid tapes were laid-up in each joint. Entire day was spent on left wing ribs.

Day 8

Tuesday, July 19, 1999

Sanded front shear web and rear spar surfaces and all skin and rib mating surfaces with 36 grit sand paper on right wing. Sanding bonding surfaces, increases surface area and results in a stronger bond. Cleaned same surfaces with acetone to remove any wax or oily surface contamination prior to bonding. Primed bottom (top) of front shear web, bottom (top) of rear spar and wing skin with resin lightly painted on. Mixed Cabosil with milled fiber, catalyzed and applied large bead with tri-folded ziploc bag to wing skin, rear shear web interface and squished utilizing spring clamps and weights. Repeated same operation with front shear web and left to cure until tomorrow. Sanded and cleaned surfaces on left wing for repeat of right wing shear web and rear spar operation tomorrow.

Day 9

Wednesday, July 20, 1999

Squished left wing shear web and rear spar with Cabosil/milled fiber mixture as already accomplished with right wing. Laid up 2 bid tapes on shear web/rib joints and rear spar/rib joints. Laid up 2 bid tapes on wing skin/shear web and wing skin/rear spar joints. Installed aileron torque tube, bearings, push-pull tube and bell cranks on right wing.

Day 10

Thursday, July 21, 1999

Laid up 2 bid tapes on shear web/rib joints and rear spar/rib joints of left wing. Laid up 2 bid tapes on wing skin/shear web and wing skin/rear spar joints. Installed aileron torque tube, bearings, push-pull tube and bell cranks on left wing. Installed landing gear flange on rib ? by squishing two pre-made 6 ply flanges with milled fiber/Cabosil and clamping with 3 large C-clamps.

Day 11

Friday, July 22, 1999

Installed landing gear flanges on left wing rib E. Mistakenly trimmed flanges to fit upside down so one flange needed to be repaired where top was trimmed away. Repaired with 6 bid tapes along top of flange, left to cure overnight. Installed left wing aileron torque tube, push-pull tube and bellcranks. Fabricated and installed 6 bid flanges over top of fuel bulkheads on both wing with Cabosil. Laidup tapes between flange and top of spar for fuel sealing. Temporally installed landing gear leg on right wing to check for alignment. Installed fuel vents in both wings at outboard fuel bulkhead rib.

Day 12

Saturday, July 23, 1999

Installed landing gear flanges on rib E on left wing with milled fiber/Cabosil. Clamped with large C-clamps. Laidup 2 bid tapes over fuel bulkhead flanges in each wing. Laidup 2 Uni and 1 bid on both sides of front shear web. Laidup 2 bid along inside of front shear web between two outermost ribs. Cleaned up miscellaneous parts, labeled and taped to wings, flaps and ailerons. Discussed with Dave some suggestions on improving builder assist program. Met with Larry at airport hanger and discussed next builder assist session in September.
