Nine - one - one.

I didn’t think it would effect me, but it did.

I was working on the fuel tank hold down straps for the Waco and had the radio playing in the background. One of those tapes made for this day was played. It consisted of music and quotes from people regarding the 911 attack on America. President Bush, family members who had lost loved ones, various people, various quotes. Pop music, country music, sounds of hope, sadness, inspiration, various people, and various messages. It was a mix of sounds and ideas, as we are a mix of sounds and ideas, as a nation. How could anyone so misunderstand us, as a people, to do such an act?

The clear-eyed view is that they, the terrorist, do exist and do think that way. They are resentful of us for what we have done with our nation. What we believe in, freedom and tolerance have allowed us to prosper beyond what their narrow view of life and people would allow. What we have accomplished as a nation has brought us criticism from a portion of the world. Even our own people have questioned where we are headed with our position in the world. This is good. The freedom to question and challenge our national goals is what has brought us to this place. We are first in development in the world because we wanted to be. We will work out the future as we have worked out the past. Our dream is one of peace and freedom for all people in this world.

So here I am in my shop, with my airplanes and projects feeling sad, two years after 911. Thinking about the people who lost their lives, families who lost members, and a lady who sang: “ In the arms of the Angels, may you find some comfort there ”!

"May we find some comfort there."

God bless America!

We have the open house at Martin Field, and our Hangar Saturday. The best revenge is to live well!!

Ron,

I don't think this ever made it into a newsletter.  I had reread some old files and there it was. If you have heard it before, bear with me!

Last week Geo. And I went into the Willamette Valley to visit friends and family. I got to spend some time hanging out at Lenhardt Airpark with Jack Lenhardt and some of the guys who "aviate" there.

Jack is trading his Helicopter collection to Evergreen Museum and, in return, in part, they are going to build him a replica of that French Channel crossing airplane. The name is pronounced - BLARE - E - O. A very primitive flying machine.

EAA CHAPTER 219

PENDLETON AIRPORT CLUBHOUSE

August 19, 2003

President Ron Linn called the August meeting to order at 7:00 pm.  July's minutes were accepted as printed in the newsletter and the Treasurer's report was presented and also accepted.

Gary Zollman and Jim Smith shared some of their experiences making the trip to Oshkosh and back. Jim Smith said he will have pictures to share with us later. Gary enjoyed the trip and getting some GPS practice in. He logged 34 hours and 3800 miles.

Discussion turned to the aerobatic team and what our Chapter had planned for them. We planned to serve breakfast Friday morning and Saturday morning. We would check our inventory to see what items we need to purchase to be able to serve pancakes, scrambled eggs, link sausages, and fresh melon.  Harold suggested we take some time after the meeting to clean up around the hangar and empty the garbage. Dee reminded us to be sure and have some one's and five's for change for the breakfast.

Jeff Guenther said the folks at the Pendleton Air Museum would like to store some boxes in our hangar and it was agreed that it would be no problem, and they can store the boxes upstairs.  Ron said that as Chapter 219 it is our mission to help out.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM and we had fresh Hermiston watermelon and blueberry cake for a treat.

The August meeting was well attended by: Ed and Dee Betts, Dave & Wilma Cheney, Roy & Shirley Clark, Cub Culbertson, Lee Dudek, Jim Dubois, Jeff Guenther, Gene Harrison, Dick Inman, Ron Linn, Ed Nakonieczny, Harold Nelson, Bob Potter, Jim Smith, Fred Tenney, Gene Williamson, Tami Kincaid, Gary Zollman, Norm Carrigg, and Bob Irving.

Next meeting scheduled for September 16th, 2003.

Tami Kincaid, Secretary

Young Eagles Closing in on Goal
As of this week, the EAA Young Eagles program has registered approximately 965,000 kids, which means we’re about 36,000 shy of reaching our ultimate goal of 1 million. While 36,000 doesn’t sound like a huge number— especially in comparison to 964,000 kids already flown—time is growing short and we need to take advantage of the good weather we have left these last key weeks. "I'd like to encourage all Young Eagle pilots to take advantage of the fall flying season and take a few Young Eagles for a flight," remarked EAA Young Eagles Director Steve Buss.

Fly-In McMinnville, Ore

Attendees from Pendleton Chapter 219 were, Ron Linn with L-5 Stinson, Dave Kelly with Piper Pacer, Jim Smith and Margaret Norris with Cessna C-152. Ron and Dave flew down on the 15th, meeting in The Dallas for breakfast on the way down. Margaret and I flew down on the morning of the 16th.

It was a little bit of a zoo, landing at McMinnville. A bit of confusion in the landing pattern, some people landing on final from 4 miles and farther out. Causing some pilots, flying normal patterns, some confusion in spacing for landing traffic. But all landed safely.

The weather down and back was clear skies. The view of Mount Hood was excellent.

Going down ran into low ceiling west of Mount Hood. On arrival at Oregon City the ceiling opened up nicely.  The return trip was uneventful.

It was the first year for the NWAAC Antique Fly-In at McMinnville Ore, which is a continuation from Evergreen Wash. They are gathering information on what they will change and improvements for the following years. The first year is a learning year.

Saturday night was a special awards banquet at the Spruce Goose Museum. Everybody that bought tickets to it had a private tour of the museum. Everybody should go down and go thru it. The hospitality of the museum was superb along with all the planes and sites. A special thank you to all the great people at McMinnville.
