Presidents Corner
As
I write this we are finally getting some sunshine! We, in Umatilla County, came
through a couple weeks of fog and low ceilings. This is not unusual here in
Northeast Oregon but I don’t particularly enjoy it. Here, at the end of the
East/West part of the Columbia basin, the basin acts like your cereal bowl.
Often filled with milk!
It
is already the middle of February and winter is moving toward its end. The days
are getting longer and I am delighted!
I
have had an interest in metal shaping, for a while, and have decided to build
an English Wheel. An English Wheel is a hand operated devise that rolls metal
between a pair of wheels and, develops curves, and compound shapes. I think
this machine was invented to build the armor wore by the warriors three to four
centuries ago. Anyway, I am building one in my “spare” time. It is an
interesting task part blacksmith and part machinist. “What I don’t get right
the first time I learn by doing twice!”
Saturday
mornings we have been helping Ed with the sheeting of his Sport Racer wings and
they are looking great! Jeff has been working on the fabric on the T-Craft and
I have brought the control surface from my Viking project in to the hangar and
have been working on the covering of them. Cub and Jim Smith have just about
gotten the Baby Ace aileron ready for silver. I am really enjoying the every
Saturday mornings at the hangar.
The
last two weeks I have gotten airplane rides with Doug Drake, Lee Dudek and in
Garry Zollman’s 135hp Cessna 140. Come up on Saturdays and see what you can get
involved in.
Again
this year Chapter 219 will host the “I/A Mechanics” annual renewal meeting at
our meeting room in bld. 113. The date is March 12, 2003 at 7-9 PM. As always,
the Hillsboro FSDO has extended an invitation to all interested people and EAA
people in particular. So, show up on the 12th and get an insight
into what the mechanics have to do to stay current.
See
you on our meeting on the third Tuesday in February at 7 PM. That will be the
18th.
Check
to make sure you have paid your dues to the national and our local chapter.

EAA CHAPTER 219 PENDLETON,OR
January 21,2003
President Ron
Linn called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the shop at Pendleton Aircraft
Service. The minutes of the November meeting were approved as printed in the
newsletter. There was no business meeting in December when about 40 people
gathered in the meeting room for the Christmas dinner on December 5.
The Treasurer
reported heavy expenditures with $365 being paid to National for administration
and insurance fees, $500 for natural gas for 2 months, and $238 for carpet. The
Treasury is in good shape. Treasurer's Report was accepted. Dues for 2003 are
due and may be paid this evening, or may be mailed to Cub at the chapter Post
Office Box #163, Pendleton. Checks should be made to EAA Chapter 219.
Ed is ready
for help to skin the wing on his Sport Racer. It will be done this Saturday at
Hangar Day, after breakfast.
Jim Smith has
relieved Bud Nielsen as Newsletter Editor. Thanks to Bud for his good work. Jim
would like all items for the newsletter to be sent to him by email jsmith@uci.net, or by mail to 2712
Riverside #52, Pendleton, 97801. All newsletter expenses, including printing,
will be paid by the chapter. Jim will figure out
the costs and get back to us.
Tammy Kincaid
is considering accepting the Secretary position.
Norm
Carrigg reports that the 501 (C ) (3) application is nearing completion. A
second authorized signature for the bank account is needed. The President and
the Treasurer will be the signers and Ron and Cub will take care of getting it
arranged. The filing fee for 501 (C )(3) is $150.
A Sopwith Pup
model with 10' wing span, which has been donated to the Pendleton Air Museum
(PAM), will arrive tomorrow and the committee would like to hang it in our Blue
Room until its permanent place at the terminal is ready. The 2 link trainers
already in the Blue Room are slated for PAM and will be evaluated as to whether
one or both can be successfully restored. There is a contact with the flight
museum in Seattle and we may be able to get some manuals to help make the
decision.
PAM would like
to contact the Boy Scout Troop to handle traffic on Airshow Day. In a PAM
meeting this evening Ron committed us to doing the Pilot's breakfast and to the
all day hospitality room for pilots and crew, which was most appreciated last
year. We are also talking around to find trailers and antique tractors to
provide transportation between the two sides of the field.
Gene Harrison
was asked, but we're not sure if he committed to doing a program on aerobatics
for the February meeting. Stay tuned.
The
meeting was adjourned at 7:45 for snacks by Carol Nelson --followed by a
program on magnetos by Harold Nelson and Jeff Guenther.
Attendance:
Ed and Dee Betts, Norm Carrigg, Wilma and Dave Cheney, Roy and Shirley Clark,
Cub Culbertson, Doug Drake, Lee Dudek" Jeff Guenther, Gene Harrison, Tom
Hutchison, Dick Inn1an, Dave Kelly, Ron Linn, Ed Nakonieczny, Harold and Carol
Nelson, Bob and Lois Potter, Floyd Slinker, Jim Smith, DuWayne and Delores
White, Gene Williamson and Tammy Kincaid, and Gary Zollman.

Tire Pressure.
Please
watch your air pressure in tires. The pressure can change with the ambient
temperature. Check the air pressure in the tires frequently as the temperature
changes. The pressure can go up or down quickly. Another lesson learned last week, thanks to
Bob Nelson and Jim Dubois.
A
reminder if any member of the club would like to receive the monthly newsletter
by e-mail, don’t hesitate to get a word to me. The best way is send me a
message stating to send the newsletter by e-mail.
Ed Betts has the plywood installed on the bottom of his wing.
He has extended the workbench, so he can put the top on
without having to shift the wing from one end to the other.
It is a pleasure to assist Cub on the aileron for the Corbin. It is very intensive process. There is a lot to learn! The next Step is the leading edge of the right wing. Then back to the engine and the cowling. That would be a little closer to getting the craft together with wings mounted.
When I started in the Aviation field, which was in 1996. It was all new to me. I had to establish a new learning curve. It was something I had wanted to do since I was a little shaver. I wouldn’t swap the it for nothing. I looked for almost 2 years before I founding N-24553! It was, as you all know, hunting, reading, comparing and procrastinating to find just what you want. It took Jim Dubois and I almost 2 months for the first annual. Which needed to get everything up in shape. Thanks to Jim for letting me work with him. I feel that I needed to know everything about the craft and to make every effort to make it as air worthy as possible.
The people that I have had the
pleasure of meeting and talking to are exceptional. It really proves to me,
that there is people out there, that will still get the shirt off their backs
to help someone else out.
There
are a lot of projects that our members are working on. Some members that come
to mind are, Ed Bett’s Blaton Sport Racer, Jeff Guenther’s T-Craft, Ron Linn’s
numerous projects, David Kelly’s sailplane sore can’t remember which one, Bob
Nelson’s homebuilt, Gary Zollman’s Starduster, Tom Hutchinson’s and again yours
escapes me, I apologize, plus more I can’t remember.

Sometimes
when we are stressed we forget to think before we key the mike. This actually
happened after the oil line blew.

No souls, four heathens.
