The
list of things I have to do, or more accurately, want to do, is very long.
What
we “need to do” is a shorter list. We will last about five minutes without
breathing. Maybe 6-7 days without water. I could last a lot longer than most
people without food. The point is that this thing that we call “a life” is made
up of a lot of things that have nothing to do with survival.
Here
in the USA we are perhaps more involved with the “extras” of life than most
societies. Our life style is one of much material conquest. I’m not complaining,
just stating an opinion.
We
have before us a long summer season and I vow I will shorten my “to do” list!
I
am starting with that 1937 Ford coupe that I brought to the Airshow. That car
is one that I bought when I was 16 years old and is the car Georgia and I drove
when we got married. Well, I’ve told everyone the story enough to drive people
to tears. I have never finished that project. At my place, things get sanded
only until you can walk on them, and that seems to be all they get. This summer
the coupe gets finished!
I
am going to fly my airplanes more this summer. What is the point of collecting
up some airplanes to fly, if you won’t take time to fly (them)! We have a
Fly-In B-B-Q at Doug Drakes on 6-15-03. I’ll start with that!
We
won’t have a “Bld.113” regular meeting in June, so if you want to attend the
June meeting you will have to go to Doug’s. It will be great fun! Drakes are
supplying the meat course and it is Pot Luck for the rest. I can hardly wait!
I
will get over to Dave Cheney’s project a couple of times this summer. Well why
don’t I make this the summer to visit all 219’s projects?
We
will fly the Corbin Baby Ace this summer!
Boy,
there is a lot to do. I had better get up and going!
See
you at Drakes!
Ron (note to self, get Waco ready to cover this
summer)

EAA CHAPTER 219
May
20th, 2003
Clubhouse,
Pendleton Airport
President
Ron Linn called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The minutes of the April meeting
were accepted as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer, Cub Culbertson, gave a
favorable report and it was accepted by the membership.
Discussion turned toward the Doolittle Raiders
Airshow and 219's involvement. The trailers we modified and used as
"people movers" during the event, were a big hit, and it was decided
we should make them available every year.
Harold Nelson suggested we might even have trailers available to shuttle
folks from the parking area in to the event grounds.
Bob
Irving suggested we send Thank You cards to the people that loaned us tractors.
Everyone agreed.
Ron
Linn reported, that some kids stole the cash in the pop refrigerator during the
weekend of the Airshow. It was agreed
we would not leave any cash in the clubhouse from now on.
Ron
Linn introduced guest Grant Rush of the National Guard. He presented the Chapter with a
question: Would we be willing to allow
Jim Morgan of Salem to hangar his B-25 Super Rabbit in our hangar while it
undergoes an annual? Grant explained it could possibly be completed by July
4th, but it could be longer due to possible fuel tank problems. He cautioned it could even be in the hangar
as late as the end of the year. Jim
Morgan did offer to pay $300.00 per month while it was here. Discussion began and points were made such
as; it would cause a lot of congestion in the hangar and members that have
their planes there would be somewhat inconvenienced, the value of the plane at
$400,000.00 brought up liability and insurance issues, the unknown length of
time it would have to be in our hangar, and our commitment to the aerobatic
competition scheduled in August, 2003 could possibly be jeopardized. After much
discussion, Doug Drake moved to decline the project. Jim Dubois seconded the
motion. It was asked of the membership
and voted on. The Chapter membership voted against the project.
A
reminder of our Young Eagles commitment on May 31st was announced. Breakfast will be served at our clubhouse
before heading over to Hermiston.
Doug
Drake reminded everyone about the fly-in barbeque scheduled for June 15th at
his place. Bring salads or dessert, and
lawn chairs. He will be serving his
excellent barbequed meats.
The
meeting was adjourned at 8:05 and Ed and Dee Betts served everyone some of
Dee's homemade cakes.

As
of 5/27/2003 there has been 905,159 Young Eagles flown as of this date. Keep up
the good work the 1,000,000 eagles flown will be a record to beat! The records
are from the Young Eagle’s site at http://www.youngeagles.org/
recorded on the above date.
Our
web site can be viewed at http://www.express-builder.com/eaa219,
thanks to Tom Hutchison another loyal member of EAA 219. He is also storing our
back newsletters.
We
had a successful Young Eagle’s Flyte at Hermiston on the 31st of
May. We didn’t get as many scouts that had signed up. The weather was fairly
brisk with the wind. After the flyte we had a 3-plane flyte to Walla Walla for
lunch. Very pleasant flyte and good vittles.
Gary
Zollman is reworking his cooling cowling on his 140 Cessna. It was running on
the warm side. On closer inspection he could understand why!
Some
of the members are discussing a flyte back to Oshkosh. More planning coming.
The
map to Doug Drakes is enclosed on the last page.

the best results for printing Doug Drake’s strip map attached with this
newsletter. For the folk’s receiving by e-mail, print map in black and white to
save on ink.

Question: How do you gauge the wind by looking at the airport windsock? What does it mean when it's out at a 45-degree angle? When it's pointing straight out? Answer: The windsock (or the "wind cone," as it is called by the FAA) is a good source of information for the pilot. It not only indicates wind direction, but also allows the pilot to estimate wind velocity and gusts. According to FAA Advisory Circular 150/5345-27C "Specification for Wind Cone Assemblies" (download from AOPA Online), a windsock will take the form of a truncated cone when filled with air. It must move freely and indicate the wind direction within 5 degrees in a 3-knot wind. The AC also specifies that the cone will be fully extended in a wind of 15 kt. So, you may estimate that a limp windsock indicates a no-wind condition. A windsock extended at 45 degrees may indicate a wind of around 7 kt, and when the windsock is fully extended, the winds may be 15 kt or higher. Windsocks will tend to move back and forth when the wind is gusty. They point downwind, so when you land or take off, you will be flying from the smaller end of the cone toward the larger. For more information on windsocks or other wind indicators, take a look at "Wind Cones" and "Which Way is the Wind Blowing?" from the August 1996 issue of Flight Training magazine |

Having just rolled out and made my way to the taxiway, I contacted ground control. The taxiways were very lengthy and one-way. This would have added nearly a mile to my travel to the gas pumps, which were only several hundred yards away. "Ground control, Cessna ***** at Alpha 6, can I "fudge" a bit and turn left to the pumps?" After a short pause, "Cessna *****, fudging approved."
