Werner Maag, retired Capt. MD-11 of Swissair has invested about 4000 hours and almost 13 years to complete his bird. If you look at his aircraft it was well worth wile! On July 25 2006 shortly after 09:30 a.m. he was airborne after having done a successful high speed taxi run. Everything was well organized and a small crowd had gathered when the elegant bird lifted off from runway 08 at Birrfeld, a small airfield some 20 NM northwest of Zurich. After doing some light airwork and testing out the controls he came back at 09.59 a.m. to complete the maiden flight of HB-YJR with a perfect landing. Everything checked out just fine and Werner was thrilled and visibly deeply satisfied. He was glad that his wife Maja who helped all along was able to make it to the airfield as well despite her severe illness. Werner thanks all his colleagues and friends who helped him to complete the aircraft and to reach his goal. He will now have to undergo a strict program to test out the aircraft as well as a noise test which is always a big hurdle to take. He hopes to be the first experimental in Switzerland that will be allowed to fly IFR. We are now fighting for 6 years but the Swiss authorities are still not 100% convinced that a modern and well equipped experimental aircraft is at least as capable to fly IFR as a venerable Cessna 172. Congratulations Werner to a job very well done. We all wish you luck with your new bird and hope that you will master the last obstacles within a short time. Congratulations Werner. Your bird is beautiful - and it's even painted!!! I am just painting mine now after 40 hours - no guts I guess. Best of luck with your IFR certification. There is no reason you shouldn't get it. Regards, Carter Smith DC-10 Captain, Retired |
