Friends: I just returned from my most recent session at the builders assist center in Toledo, Washington. This was #6 for me and it has been a long haul fabricating and assembling all of the parts that I was shorted when Roy and Nancy called it quits. But Dan Roundtree and I have finally gotten to the point where we are ready to start putting the airframe components together to make this project look like an airplane. I may actually live long enough to fly this thing afterall! Darrell Peterson has acquired all of what was left from the bankruptcy of Express (airplane, moulds, jigs, some parts, etc) and has a VERY nice set up for those of us that need and want the help to get through our projects to completion. The shop is better organized and equipped than "the factory" was when I was there. They are able to make and/ or acquire parts to keep all of us supplied with whatever we need now. And Darrell is as accomodating as anyone that I have ever worked with. It is about time that someone with a record of running a sucessful business got his hands on this company! Darrell took me up for a "demo flight" while I was there (my first time flying an airplane....I am normally just a helicopter guy) and it flys remarkably like the helicopter with the same stick inputs. This should be a breeze learning how to fly this plane. So if any of you need or want help with your projects, contact Darrell at 360-864-6271 or go to their web site at www.compairtechllc.com for more information. Nice people with no BS like I got before! GHW

Gary,
Great news. Glad to hear you are making progress. A question that keeps coming up is bill-of-sale for the registration. Since Darrell's company got all the assets, can they issue bill of sales for previously sold kits?

sorry to get this late, but we flew our plnae to the Bahamas again. So better get to work.

My 2000 manual says to mount the wings at 1.5 degrees and the H Stab at zero. I did, then my plane and others of the same need a lot of up elevator, so I re alined my stab to 1 degree down, now the elevator flies at neutral when there are pax in the back seat.

Agree completely with Wayne. At level flight with me and one pax in front, my elevator is deflected enough that the leading tip of the counter-weight is almost fully visible (I have an Auriga with the forward weight section of the elevator as a rectangle; Jim's in Virginia has an elevator with the forward tip a triangle). Anyway, my trim is very nose up for level flight. Were my elevator not mounted when I got the kit and glassed in, I would have mounted it 1-degree nose up (leading edge down).

Joe/Jim: Sorry for the late reply. I am on the run very hard right now. Regarding the bill of sale, I don't know if Darrell will be able to help you there as he has not been able to get his hands on the hard drives and some of the documents that were supposed to have come over from the bankruptcy as Barry Henthorn seems to be holding them hostage for some reason. It looks like Darrell will have to haul his ass back into court again to have the judge hold him in contempt if he doesn't turn this stuff over. However, I understand that a bill of sale is not the only way to go on this. I have read elsewhere on this forum that you can make a notarized statement and attest to the facts that the FAA will accept as a replacement for the bill of sale. Others know more about this than I do so let's see what they have to say.

Regarding the sale of new kits, the answer is "yes". Darrell and company are making parts on an as needed basis now for those of us that need them. This is what we have been waiting for and why five of us spent the large amount of money necessary to force Henthorn into bankruptcy. He was just selling off the assets and never really showed anyone that he was ever going to do anything with the Express stuff but to further "skin the cat". It is about time that someone (Darrell) with the business acumen and knowledge of aircraft got his hands on this company. In my opinion, it is the first time ever that both skill sets have come together at the same time in the same place. Lucky us! Darrell has even been purchasing other kits that have been abandoned (he ended up with Roy and Nancy's stuff when they didn't pay the hanger rent in Olympia) and says that he will make them available to those folks that are looking to start a project at a discount. This is a real opportunity as much of the work has been already been done. This work would have been done under the supervision of Dan Roundtree...so there should be little doubt that it was done correctly. Dan is a real stickler for doing things as best as they can be done. He has worked at Boeing, Lear Jet and Pheonix composites in the past and has decades of experience under his belt. I would have been absolutely SCREWED wtihout Dan and Darrell. So if any of you would like to take a real nice vacation and go visit these guys, you will get a face full of what they are doing. Just going up in the Express Demo plane got me all fired up again and I am already planning my next trip back out to Washington (beautiful country...big trees) to "work" again in the spring. The only part of my trips to Washington that are less than fun is going back to the hotel every night with no wife, no dog, and no friends to hang out with. Darrell is talking about building a "mini hotel" near the airport that would really be nice if it comes about. That way they could get two builders in there at the same time and have a bit more fun and companionship than exists right now. Dan could easily handle two builders at the same time as he always has an answer for me when I ask him what he wants me to do next. He keeps me on track and making progress every day. I never have to wait for materials or tools as I had to with the "Larry and company people". So I hope that your personal "economy" will allow for continued building for those of you (like me) that have not made it to the finish line yet! I just cannot wait till that day! GHW

Does anyone have the technical drawings for the brake pedals and the attachment to the torque tube. I am rebuilding a PA-12 and want to put the same brake setup that is on the EXPRESS. I really don't want to take the brakes off my EXPRESS and copy.

It sure is nice flying weather.... I have put 180 hrs on my plane this last couple of years and have enjoyed the great qualities of the design. From business to family stuff, to Kansas to Oregon and many places in between, it's been a great traveler.....I have flown into a few airshow events, up and down Ca., and never see another Express. Have I just been missing you guys? I know there's some guys up in the bay area...Lets fly into somewhere this coming season, or someone invite us to your airport on the west coast/Nevada or somewhere. I had a guy out of Compton, Ca. stop in for a few hours....it sure was interesting to see the planes side by side. We have a real nice ap here in Tehachapi, with plenty of lodging and good weather, and I invite any of you up, any time.
