Many builders are installing wing deice systems that require heavy wiring out to the leading edge of the wing. In the past it has been the practice to use a piece of 1/2 inch PVC pipe as a conduit. The inside diameter of the pipe makes for a tight fit for three #6 wires, plus antenna cables, plus strobe cables, plus navigation/clearance light cables, plus fuel quantity probe cable and so on. In the wings of the Burr's RG project we improved the design by using 2 1/4 inch wide strips of the wing skin trimmed off the trailing edge to form a triangular conduit along the lower, aft corner of the leading edge. This provides much more room for wiring without getting in the way of the aileron mechanism and adds some additional structure to the leading edge. Besides, it just looks better than a PVC pipe embedded in a blob of cabo. The new conduit has gaps at each of the wing access holes, making it easy to pull cables through the length of the wing and tie them off around the aileron mechanisms. The gelcoat side of the conduit wall is toward the inside making at least one side of the conduit slippery for easy wire pulling. All future projects will be constructed this way at the factory and the change made to the manual. | ||
